In the San Gabriel Valley northeast of Los Angeles, City of Hope’s outpatient center needed one thing its 110-acre campus didn’t yet have: a central gathering place for patients, families and staff to unwind. OTL was brought in to build the water feature that would fill that gap at the center’s Hope Plaza, based on a design from JOMA Design Studio.
Now, that fountain serves as the crowning touch on one of the region’s most respected healthcare campuses.

CHALLENGE
OTL took on this build during one of the rainiest Southern California winters on record, while the surrounding hospital campus was undergoing its own construction.
The campus remained fully occupied and operational throughout, so every phase of work had to be scheduled around patients, families and medical staff without disrupting daily care.
OTL’S
SOLUTION
OTL constructed a 60-foot inverted radius wall finished in basalt, with white water spilling into the basin at 1,500 gallons per minute.
Fifteen submersible pumps, each moving 100 gallons per minute, keep that flow constant, while 22 custom niche lights and LED fixtures illuminate the wall for a dramatic yet calming effect after dark.
Throughout construction, OTL coordinated closely with the project architects to keep water flowing evenly across the top of the fountain and contained well within its basin.
City of Hope now has an inspirational water feature that reflects the compassionate, patient-centered care the center is known for. It gives visitors from near and far a breathtaking focal point, filled with soothing sound and sensation, to enjoy for years to come.
