Williams Square has been an iconic Irving, Texas landmark since 1983, anchored by nine bronze mustangs galloping through a watercourse. Created by artist Robert Glen, the sculptures are the largest equestrian works in existence and among the world’s best public sculptures. In 2018, general contractor Structure Tone Southwest brought OTL on to rebuild the plaza’s aging fountain.

CHALLENGE
OTL had to strip out the fountain’s outdated equipment, plumbing and electrical and route new lines 350 feet to the feature. Reaching an existing tunnel wall meant excavating within a structure that limited the equipment OTL could use. The fountain’s iconic hoof nozzles, simulating the mustangs’ splash effect, also needed to be recreated with the same believability.

SOLUTION
OTL used a large crane to lower a track hoe into the lower reservoir, letting the team excavate and reach the tunnel wall. Original hoof nozzle designer Dan Ricciardi fabricated new nozzles that recreated the mustangs’ splash with the same realism. OTL also installed updated pumps, controls and treatment systems throughout the plaza.
The renewed fountain lets Robert Glen’s sculpture work live on for decades, giving office tenants and visitors a welcoming gathering space year-round. Reused original granite also saved the City of Irving significant cost while preserving the plaza’s legacy.
