Scripps Pitzer Science Center
Located on the campus of Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California, the Scripps Pitzer Science Center is a 65,000 square foot, state-of-the-art center for scientific learning. Featuring teaching labs, prep spaces for study in science and interdisciplinary courses, as well as collaboration spaces and outdoor courtyards and plazas, this impressive facility opened in response to the continued demand for STEM education and research.
On this bustling campus, a quiet, serene space was needed for reflection and relaxation. Working together with project stakeholders, OTL delivered an impressive and impactful water feature nestled within an interior courtyard that has become a contemplative and collaborative centerpiece of the campus.
Idea
Dubbed The Nucleus, the Scripps Pitzer Science Center opened in September 2024 as a partnership between Scripps College and Pitzer College on the campus of The Claremont Colleges.
The partnership’s focus was to extend and reimagine the science program for both Pitzer and Scripps colleges, by creating a new space that would offer expanded STEM courses, as well as add new faculty and offer a collaborative space for teachers and students across all scientific disciplines.
Along with a rooftop greenhouse and state-of-the-art teaching labs, The Nucleus also features collaborative learning spaces, both indoors and outdoors. Community courtyards and plazas are featured throughout the space, including one with a special art installation.
OTL’s team designed and constructed a water feature highlighting a bronze sculpture suspended over a reflection pool, supported by three stainless steel slanted columns. At first glance, the sculpture appears to be lit from within, with flowing curves that open up the interior to natural sunlight.
The water appears to be still, but it is actually constantly recirculating over a black granite circular retainer. As the sun moves across campus throughout the day, so does the sculpture’s shadow over the water, offering an ever-changing serene spot of respite.
Impact
Surrounded by outdoor seating in a sunny courtyard, the water feature offers a quiet place for studying, reflection or meditation amongst a bustling campus. As tomorrow’s scientists prepare for a promising future, there is a calm and welcoming place at Scripps Pitzer Science Center to pause, recharge and gain perspective.
