Leading With Heart: Why Giving Back Is Good Business

As another year draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on what truly defines success at OTL. It isn’t just the fountains we build or the revenue we generate. It’s the difference we make in the lives of people and communities around us. Leading with heart isn’t a slogan; it’s part of how we do business, and it’s one of our greatest advantages.

Giving back isn’t just charity; it’s smart business. When we invest in causes that matter, we strengthen our brand, our culture, and our relationships. Philanthropy fuels innovation, deepens trust, and inspires the kind of pride that drives people to do their best work.

At OTL, giving back takes many forms, from supporting City of Hope’s lifesaving research to flying rescue dogs to new homes through Pilots N Paws. Through our involvement in 100 Companies That Care, we’ve seen how collective generosity can multiply impact. When dozens of companies contribute manageable amounts, those individual gifts combine to create a powerful force for good, making meaningful projects possible that none of us could fund alone. These efforts remind us that craftsmanship and compassion can coexist beautifully.

The most effective giving is intentional. It starts by choosing causes that align with your company’s purpose and expertise. For a design/build firm like ours, that might mean focusing on sustainability, natural resource conservation, or outdoor education, areas where our work and our values naturally intersect. This approach ensures that contributions are authentic and meaningful, not just financial gestures. Strategic partnerships with nonprofits and local organizations amplify results by combining resources, networks, and shared goals.

Real impact happens when everyone gets involved. Encouraging employees to volunteer, help select charitable partners, or join company-sponsored events builds a genuine sense of pride. Measuring participation and community outcomes isn’t about scorekeeping; it’s how we stay accountable and make sure our efforts grow year after year.

In the end, leading with heart isn’t just about doing good; it’s about doing well by doing good. When we align our business with our values, we create a ripple effect that touches our company, our clients, and our communities. That’s the kind of success that lasts.
